AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO SENATE REPORT INTO RAAF CONTAMINATION

The Australian Government has tabled its response to the Senate Committee’s report into the Williamtown RAAF Base contamination.
It’s announced it will continue the existing compensation to fishermen and businesses affected by fishing bans, as well as introducing a new financial package called a ‘Business Transition Payment’.
The federal government says an Income Recovery Subsidy will extend for eight weeks beyond June 30, while from the start of July, fishermen will also be able to claim a business hardship payment of up to $20,000.
In addition, a Business Transition Payment of up to $25,000 will allow fishermen to pursue alternative sources of income if the ban extends beyond June 30.
The Senate Committee handed down eight recommendations in its report.
