Drivers will have a chance to shed demerit points early under a proposal from the New South Wales Opposition.
The state Labor party has pledged to introduce a 12-month trial of the incentives program.
Under the program, drivers who remain infringement-free will be rewarded by the removal of a demerit point.
Currently, it takes three years from the time of the initial offence to have a demerit point removed.
Labor claims the current state government’s focus is on revenue raising, alleging that removing speed camera warning signs saw penalties jump from $4 million in 2020 to $41 million in 2021 and $40 million in 2022 for “low range speeding offences”.
“One death on our roads is one death too many. But after a number of deaths already recorded this holiday period, we need a new approach,” Opposition Leader Chris Minns said.
“It’s time we put safety back at the centre of our road rules, not revenue raising.”
Shadow roads minister John Graham said both the “carrot” and the “stick” were needed to face speeding offences.
