‘Biggest tick’ vet has ever seen found on dog in the Northern Rivers

A little Jack Russell is lucky to be alive after a giant tick and its smaller companion caused the dog to suffer paralysis.

Lennox Head Vet Clinic said it was the “biggest tick” staff had ever seen and made for a Halloween nightmare for the pup’s owners.

Photos show the two ticks found on the little Jack Russell from Byron Bay, one was a normal, semi-engorged parasite and the other was a giant.

“These two monsters were found on a small dog that came in collapsed and struggling to breathe with tick paralysis,” the vet clinic wrote on social media.

“Thankfully after receiving the antiserum alongside intensive care for a number of days, the patient is on the slow road to recovery.”

The clinic warned pet owners that tick paralysis is “no joke” and to always check animals for parasites.

“Tick paralysis has already taken the lives of so many pets this year, and we are seeing ticks in plague proportions after the wet weather,” the vet clinic said.

“Another gentle reminder to please keep your pets up to date with year-round prevention, and search their coats regularly.”
