Man shot dead in ‘targeted’ Newcastle attack
A man has been shot dead in Newcastle overnight in what police believe is a targeted attack.
Emergency services were called to a unit on Fowler Street, Hamilton South, after reports of a shooting about 11pm on Tuesday night.
Police found a 57-year-old man at the front door of his unit with a gunshot wound.
The person he lived with called emergency services and he was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
Officers are now investigating the circumstances of the man’s death.
“At this point in time, our information suggests that this was a targeted incident, and not a random matter,” Newcastle City Police District Commander Superintendent Tracy Chapman said today.
Police are yet to publicly identify the victim, but tributes were today left at the scene for “Anthony”.
Neighbours said they heard a “bang” last night, and said the man had only moved into the apartment in the last few months.
“All of a sudden, I heard a huge noise, a bang. I knew it was a firearm that’d gone off,” a resident called Kevin told NBN 9 News.
Anyone who saw or heard anything or has dashcam footage of the area is urged to contact police.
