COUNCIL STREET FIG TREES COME DOWN

A familiar scene for Cooks Hill residents today, who once again saw their fig trees start to come down.
The towering trees along Council Street, between Darby and Bruce Streets, will be removed over the coming days.
On the same day in 2011 – the first fig trees were infamously demolished on Laman Street.
Newcastle City Council says it needs to replace drainage, footpaths, kerbs and gutters after roots caused significant damage.
17 new trees are expected to replace the figs.
