HUNTER WATER TO SLUG CUSTOMERS

Hunter Water has applied to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal to increase the cost of water by 2.1 per cent or 40 cents a week.

That’s the equivalent of just over $20 a year for a typical household.

Hunter Water Managing Director Kim Wood has blamed the increasing costs of running a business for the proposed hike.

“Hunter Water operates some 520 pumping stations, 6 water treatment plants and 19 waste water treatment facilities,” he said.

“The cost of electricity alone makes up 12 per cent of our total operating costs and Hunter Water is, like many other businesses, affected by rising costs.

IPART will hold a public hearing on the proposal in Newcastle on November 13.
