GOOD FAITH GONE IN FIG FLIP FLOP

A short lived pause in the protest over the future of Newcastle’s landmark Laman Street fig trees is over, after the city’s General Manager, Phil Pearce, received legal advice that the removal process should proceed.
The State Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen had brokered a consensus deal, late yesterday, among opposing councillors, to invite an independent aborist, to offer a definitive position on the condition of the figs.
Council insists the trees pose a safety risk to the community.
The GM says “It is recognised that not all members of the community believe council’s information is accurate. Nonetheless, the elected council determined the Laman Street figs should be removed and replaced as soon as practical. I have a legal responsibility to implement this resolution.
