STATE GOVERNMENT RECOMMITS TO SURFEST

The state government has recommitted to Newcastle’s Surfest, announcing it will support the event for another two years.
Surfest is one of the world’s oldest professional surfing events and it’s set to celebrate its 30th anniversary next year.
In past year’s it’s attracted some of the country’s top surfing talent including Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson and Sally Fitzgibbons.
Deputy Premier, Andrew Stoner, says the event is a win for the region’s economy.
“Surfest continues to draw thousands of surf-fans to Newcastle each February, with this year’s event seeing close to 2,900 visitors from outside the region generating more than $1.2 million in visitor expenditure for the local economy.”
