When NBN News started in Newcastle, BHP Steelworks had been here for almost 50 years.
Just about everyone had a family member, or knew someone that worked at the massive plant.
However few outside the works ever really understood the hellish conditions involved there.
During this visit, our camera crew filmed some of the 1960’s steel process at the Number 4 blast furnance.
While a routine event for these few workers, it was a spectacle, one shared during our evening news with the many.
On this day, NBN News recorded a way of life now part of history, the BHP works closing here in 1999.
