CONTRABAND DRONE DROP FOILED AT HUNTER VALLEY JAIL

A man has been charged after allegedly plotting to drop contraband into Cessnock jail via a drone.

Police, patrolling the prison complex, stopped a car on Maitland Road on Sunday morning.

They searched the vehicle, finding a drone as well as a plastic bag containing a phone, a charger, tobacco, a lighter and prescription drugs.

A 25-year-old man was arrested and charged with a string of offences, including two counts of unlawfully delivering or attempting to deliver anything to an inmate.

He was refused bail and faced Cessnock Local Court today.

Hunter Valley Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Matt Zimmer, said officers will continue to work alongside officers from Corrective Services NSW to identify and take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband.
“Our joint operations with Corrective Services NSW will continue to investigate and prosecute individuals who attempt to facilitate the supply of prohibited drugs or other contraband into facilities in the Hunter Valley district,” Det Insp Zimmer said.
