IRRIGATORS NOT COMPLYING WITH NEW WATER LAWS

An audit has found less than half of the state’s major irrigators are complying with new laws to prevent water theft.

Legislation came into effect in March to ensure all water taken from rivers and creeks is properly measured.

The regulator’s revealed 45 per cent of large pumps do not have adequate meters installed.

Less than a quarter of water users met all the requirements.

Individuals caught using incorrect metering can be fined up to $750 – or $1,500 for companies.
