The Manning River at Farquhar Inlet, near Old Bar, will be dredged in the coming weeks, with preparation to start on Wednesday.
The dredging, which will take about six weeks, was scheduled by MidCoast Council outside of the school holidays to minimise disruptions.
It comes as a petition to create a permanent navigable entrance at the site and at Harrington has reached 6000 signatures.
