EXCAVATORS USED TO RELEASE WATER FROM BELONGIL CREEK INTO THE OCEAN

Byron Shire Council has today taken action to prevent flooding at Belongil, bringing in excavators to scrape back the sandbar at Belongil Creek.
A build-up of sand has stopped water flowing into the ocean.
The waterway reached a height of 1-point-3-2 metres, putting the catchment at risk of flooding.
“We were eagerly awaiting the rain which has come today, and we will closely monitor over the next 24-48 hours,” Mayor of Byron Shire, Michael Lyon, said.
A similar situation is evolving at Tallow Creek.
Staff are closely monitoring water levels, the sandbar and rainfall predictions.
