MORE THAN JUST A MOZZIE BITE: ROSS RIVER FEVER SPIKES
Ross River fever cases have spiked in the Hunter, with the local health district experiencing its highest number of cases in 30 years.
641 cases were recorded over the past 12 months – the highest number in the state.
It is also the most cases the region has seen since records began in 1991.
The fever is transmitted by mosquitoes and symptoms can be debilitating, including a fever, rash and muscle aches.
This year, 10 people in the district have contracted the viral infection.
