ALMOST 150 MANUFACTURING JOB LOSSES FOR NEWCASTLE

About 100 workers from WesTrac’s Tomago Caterpillar machinery business are expected to be made redundant, with Seven Group announcing it will cut 630 positions nationally.
A final breakdown of job losses is yet to come, but approximately 200 are expected to come from NSW, half of those from the Newcastle operation.
Australian Manufacturing Workers Union organiser Daniel Wallace says the union is currently seeking legal advice on the future of 70 apprentices from the NSW branch of the company.
“They’ve made the decision to lay-off too easily,” he said.
This comes alongside news UGL’s Newcastle facility has shed 46 positions, following failed negotiations between the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the state government on $6-billion worth of transport infrastructure contracts.
