MAN CHARGED WITH 14 OFFENCES OVER NORTH COAST PURSUIT
A man will face court on fourteen charges, after he allegedly led police on a pursuit in the state’s north.
Just after before 10am yesterday, police were told about a stolen white Mitsubishi Mirage seen near a shopping centre on Kerr Street, Ballina.
Officers found the vehicle and a pursuit began, but it was terminated shortly after, due to safety concerns.
The Mitsubishi was abandoned around ten minutes later, when the driver allegedly tried to carjack a second vehicle, before stealing a nearby Kia Rio.
Police allege the man drove the Kia Rio in an erratic and dangerous manner for two hours through several suburbs, covering more than 30 kilometres.
It’s also alleged the driver continued onto the wrong side of the road and onto the footpath in the path of pedestrians.
It’s understood the Kia Rio was involved in numerous collisions, but there are no reports of injuries to members of the public.
Police put out several road spikes, before the Kia Rio was located abandoned, and crashed into a fence at Ravenswood Drive, Goonellabah.
Just before 1pm, officers found and arrested a man on Bellara Court, whilst he was allegedly attempting to steal two other vehicles.
He was charged with a string of offences at Lismore Police Station, including drug possession, dangerous driving, and aggravated robbery.
The Ballina man was refused bail to appear at Lismore Local Court tomorrow.
