A sparkling day at Caves Beach was interrupted earlier this morning, when a shark was spotted swimming close to the popular family swimming spot.
Lake Macquarie lifeguards sounded the shark alarm just after 9:45 this morning, forcing dozens of beachgoers onto the sand.
The beach was closed for over an hour.
People are encouraged to remain vigilant in and out of the water this summer.
