VINNIES CALLS FOR MORE SOCIAL HOUSING
Vinnies has called on the NSW Government to increase social housing, as rates of homelessness continue to rise.
According to recent government figures, more than 100,000 people across the state are still waiting for a roof over their heads.
For thousands of families, pleas for safe and adequate accommodation have continued for more than 10 years.
The organisation’s Vice President for Social Justice, Brooke Simmons, says the situation is so dire, “people are couch surfing, living out of their cars, going without meals to make sure they can pay rent.”
She also says COVID 19 has caused further challenges for families already struggling, increasing the need for social housing.
“Social housing is supposed to be a safety net but it It’s not an adequate safety net if so many people are falling through it.”
St Vincent de Paul says it will continue to urge for better funding and additional buildings for those in need.
