While Newcastle laments missing out, $10.8-million of the state budget was allocated to the Art Gallery of New South Wales for its redevelopment.
But in a vote of confidence from the art community, a top landscape painter has chosen the gallery as the starting point for his new exhibition.
The display, which will tour Australia, includes 50 stunning pieces by Philip Wolfhagen (HAR-GAN).
