ALLEGED RAYMOND TERRACE SHOOTER PLEADS NOT GUILTY

A man has faced court charged over the shooting death of a young father during a street brawl at Raymond Terrace, north of Newcastle last week.

31-year-old John Wayne Sheddon pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and affray.

21-year-old father of two Josh Maynard was gunned down in the early hours of June 30.

Police say he was shot in the chest after getting out of a car during a street fight between rival groups at Raymond Terrace.

Mr Maynard’s youngest child was just a week old at the time.

Today in Maitland Local Court, John Sheddon, also from Raymond Terrace, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and affray.

A 28-year-old woman has also been charged with concealing an offence.

John Sheddon didn’t apply for bail, and will face Newcastle Court via video link in September.

Homicide detectives say the investigation is ongoing and haven’t ruled out further charges.

The accused has given permission for police to take DNA from him, and to have photographs taken of his hands and forearms, in relation to the affray charge.

Mr Maynard’s death was the third shooting fatality in the Newcastle region in a week.
