SECOND MAN CHARGED AFTER POLICE OFFICER ASSAULTED IN MAITLAND
A passenger who allegedly fled from police in Maitland on Sunday night has been charged.
The 24-year-old is accused of assaulting a police officer during a routine vehicle stop in Telarah.
At about 8:40pm, an officer stopped a Ford hatchback on Trevor Street after it was allegedly driving dangerously.
Police say two men got out of the car and approached the officer.
The driver, a 20-year-old man, allegedly punched the male officer.
As the sergeant tried to arrest him, the passenger inserted himself between the men.
The driver allegedly punched the officer in the face, breaking his eye socket, before both men ran away.
Shortly after the 20-year-old was spotted at a nearby rail corridor – he was arrested by two responding officers and taken to Maitland Police station.
Following further inquiries, a 24-year-old man was arrested at a home on Ada Street at 3pm yesterday.
He was charged with assaulting a police officcer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, resist officer in execution of duty and escape police custody.
He was refused bail to appear at Maitland local court today.
