From July 1, rock fishermen in Ballina could be handed a $100 on-the-spot fine for failing to wear a life jacket.
The fine applies at high risk locations, including Iron Peg, Flat Rock and Skennars Headland, as well as Evans Head in the Richmond Valley.
It comes after a man died while rock fishing south of Yamba last month.
