MAN ACCUSED OF TRYING TO SMUGGLE DRUGS INTO JAIL INSIDE A TENNIS BALL
A man will face court after allegedly trying to throw a tennis ball containing drugs over the fence of Cessnock jail.
Police say the 31-year-old and another man rode an unregistered Yamaha motorbike, believed to have been stolen from a Dora Creek home in May, up to the outer wall of the jail at around 2pm on Sunday.
Officers approached the men and they sped away, crashing into a tree.
Neither was injured.
Police restrained one man, while the other fled into bushland.
They seized the tennis ball, and found methylamphetamine and other illicit substances inside.
The man was refused bail and will appear in Cessnock Local Court today, charged with eight offences.
