MAN CHARGED OVER POLICE PURSUITS

A man will face court today over two pursuits in the Hunter over the weekend.

Police stopped a Toyota Corolla at Raymond Terrace just after 3pm on Friday and spoke with the driver, before he sped away, starting a pursuit.

Officers followed the man through the suburb, with the Toyota allegedly reaching an estimated speed of 140 kilometres an hour in a 50km/h zone.

The car then stopped on Charles Street and the driver ran away, but police lost him.

Just after 11 o’clock last night, police were patrolling Raymond Terrace Road at Chisholm, when they tried to stop a Hyundai Santa Fe for a random breath test.

When the car failed to stop, a pursuit started through Thornton and Millers Forest, the driver allegedly reaching estimated speeds of 140 kilometres an hour in a 80km/h zone.

Eventually stopping at a Woodberry home, the driver, a 54-year-old man, and a 42-year-old female passenger were arrested and taken to Maitland Police Station.

The driver later tested positive for methylamphetamine and cannabis, and was charged with ten offences.

Police will allege the Telarah man was behind the wheel during both pursuits.

He’ll face Newcastle Local Court today.
