SALVAGE OPERATION UNDERWAY ON SWANSEA CHANNEL

Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie is this morning salvaging a fishing trawler which ran aground and sank in Swansea Channel overnight.

The trawler was heading towards Newcastle just after midnight last night, when the skipper, and sole passenger of the vessel, radioed help.

The skipper told Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie, the boat was experiencing electrical issues and was taking in water.

About an hour later, the 52 foot trawler ran aground in Swansea Channel bar and its motors cut out.

The Marine Rescue team rushed to help the skipper, but they were unable to prevent the trawler from sinking.

The skipper was returned to shore and bunked at the unit’s Pelican boat base overnight.

The trawler is expected to be removed from the channel later today.

Reporter Lauren Kempe will have more tonight in NBN News at 6pm.
