NORTH WEST ROAD BLITZ NABS HUNDREDS OF SPEEDING DRIVERS

A four day police blitz across the New England and Oxley Police Districts has nabbed more than 200 speeding drivers.

The high visibility operation, named Operation Ricko, was conducted in small towns and on back roads, throughout the Western Region.

From Friday May 15 to Monday May 18, police conducted 1128 random breath tests, and 45 random drug tests.

More 470 infringements were issued including, 224 speeding offences, 11 seatbelt offences, 7 drink driving offences and 12 defect notices.

During the operation, police spotted a 32-year-old woman driving than 50 kilometres over the speed limit at Gunnedah.

It’s alleged she was travelling at 100 km/hr in a a residental street, with a speed limit of 50km/hr.

She was slapped with a $2482 fine and her licence was suspended for 6 months.

Another serious offence occurred in Tamworth on Saturday night, when a 46-year-old woman was allegedly caught drink-driving.

Police allege she returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.180, more than three times the legal limit.

Western Region Traffic Tactician Inspector Ben Macfarlane said this style of operation will be ongoing across the region.

“We need to reinforce in motorists’ minds that drink driving and speeding in smaller towns and remote areas is not okay.”

There will be additional deployment of Highway Patrol officers across the region to help with the ongoing operation.
