SALVAGE CREW DISCOVERS BROKEN CONTAINERS, SPILLING STEEL BEAMS

A crew retrieving dozens of sunken shipping containers off the Hunter coast has found two containers split open, spilling steel beams onto the ocean floor.

The beams were so heavy, all 36 of them had to be lifted individually by the salvage boat’s compensating crane.

They also found a hydraulic tank and motor and a corner section of another container.

The $15 million, month-long operation is drawing to a close and the MV Pride will return to the Port of Newcastle for a final time tomorrow afternoon.

To date, 59 containers have been recovered, with four remaining.

In June 2018, more than 80 containers were lost off the cargo ship, the YM Efficiency in rough seas.
