Blue-green algae has been found in the Namoi River, forcing Water New South Wales to issue a high red alert.
The algae is located at Keepit Dam, just 40 kilometres north-east of Tamworth.
Stock and domestic users are being urged to take from alternative water supplies.
Algae has also been found at Keepit Dam.
Water users are urged to be cautious and avoid contact if the algae becomes visible.
