COUNCIL VOTES TO SAVE LISMORE CUP HOLIDAY

Council debated the Lismore Cup public holiday for a third time in four months last night.
Councillor Nancy Casson put forward a motion to cancel it, citing the financial burden on local businesses, forking out penalty rates.
The motion was rejected, which came as a relief to members of the Turf Club.
“We’re all happy, the board’s happy, racing NSW country’s happy we also especially have listened in this one and understand that there’s some changing attitudes,” Cr Casson said.
Council will write to the state government to seek a half-day public holiday for the September race.
