MOTORBIKE RIDER KILLED IN POLICE PURSUIT
An investigation is underway after a man died in a police pursuit in Newcastle this morning.
Just before 3am, police were patrolling the CBD when they tried to stop a motorbike near Steele Street.
A pursuit began when he failed to stop, before crashing at high speed into a pole and snapping it, on Scott Street.
Officers tried to give first aid, but the rider died at the scene.
Traffic diversions are in place in the CBD, as Scott Street remains closed between Wolf and Watt Streets.
The investigation will be independently reviewed.
Jacinta Lee will have the full details and CCTV footage in tonight’s report.
