A five-million cubic metre expansion of Eraring Power Station’s ash dam has been approved by the Independent Planning Commission.
As part of the deal, Origin Energy will be required to re-use 80 per cent of the coal ash by 2021.
A community consultative committee will also be formed to handle air quality and other health concerns.
But the Hunter Community Environment Centre says the decision hasn’t addressed the risk of catastrophic failure – a factor that forced the closure of Myuna Bay Sport and Rec centre.
