WARNING ISSUED AFTER MINE WORKER INJURED
The New South Wales Resource Regulator has cautioned mine operators to “be vigilant” after a worker was injured in an incident at the Hunter Valley’s Mount Arthur coal mine earlier this month.
The workers were putting up a scaffold in an enclosed sump during a plant shut-down, when 3000 litres of water was suddenly released from an overflow at the top of the plant.
The water flooded the area where they were working, and they were forced to make a quick escape – one of them suffering knee injuries.
The Resources Regulator recommended “all hazards need to be identified” to reduce risks to workers, and suggested a second exit point from confined spaces such as this one.
