A potentially explosive discovery has been made among the keepsakes of a former Hunter Valley, World War 2 digger.

John Johnson fought with the revered Rats of Tobruk and also served at El Alemein and New Guinea.

He survived the war, but since his death, his collection of military memorabilia was passed down to his family at Coffs Harbour.

Inside an old medical kit, a bottle of solution was found to have crystalised, posing a threat similar to TNT.

The bomb squad had to be called in to carry out a controlled detonation.
