500,000 REASONS TO CELEBRATE

OzHarvest

OzHarvest Newcastle has half a million reasons to celebrate, after reaching the milestone of 500,000 kilos of rescued food.

The food is saved from ending up in landfill and delivered to people in need across the Newcastle/Hunter region.

The local arm, part of the national OzHarvest organisation, began operating in early 2010 and collects about 5 tonnes of food from supermarkets , clubs, cafes and hotels each week.

Operations manager, Monique Maguire says the milestone is surreal considering their small beginnings.

“To think that we only started operating three and a half years ago, we got our second van this year and we’re able to assist more than 70 agencies each week,”.

However Monique says Newcastle should also be celebrating the win- for the those in need, and the environment.

“Not only are we helping to feed those most in need at a time when things are
really tough, we are also helping to save the environment by reducing food waste from ending up in landfill.”

The Newcastle arm is part of the national scheme operating across Sydney, Wollongong, Adelaide and Brisbane.
