It’s great news for the species, which has experienced a population drop of more than 30% in the last 20 years, and is on track to become extinct by 2050.
General Manager Tim Faulkner says, “We pride ourselves in our koala breeding program, as sadly we’re at a critical turning point for the future of koalas in the wild. We are doing everything we can to ensure a future for what is arguably Australia’s most iconic, native mammal and after the confirmation that we have seven joeys, we’re feeling lucky!”
Australia has the world’s worst mammal extinction rate, with more than 40 species lost so far.
