ARRESTS MADE AS POLICE INVESTIGATE SPATE OF ROBBERIES

Three men, who police will allege were responsible for eight armed robberies across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie have been charged.

The trio were arrested as part of an investigation by Strike Force Bergs, which was set up as a result of a spate of robberies at venues at Rathmines, Toronto, Edgeworth, New Lambton, Boolaroo, Telarah and Wangi.

On one occasion, two men armed with an axe and a knife broke into a golf club at Toronto, where they stole keys and attempted to make off in a car.

Following investigations, a 24-year-old man was arrested at a home at Fishing Point, with a 27-year-old man arrested at Maitland later that day.

Both were charged with 17 offences, including nine counts of robbery armed with offensive weapon.

A third man, aged 36, was also arrested.

He was charged with three offences and granted conditional bail.

Investigations are continuing.
