Day one of the Margaret River Pro saw Avoca’s Adrian Buchan narrowly finish last in his heat.
The 36-year-old’s final ride of the day saw him fall short of second by less than half a point.
Meanwhile, tour rookie Macy Callaghan only managed a two-ride total of 8.00 to see her also finish third.
The pair will surf in the elimination round next.
