A nine-year-old girl remains in Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital, after she was admitted on Monday, in an unresponsive condition and with serious bruising.
Doctors were told the young girl had consumed food containing an illicit drug and may have been given non-prescribed medication.
Following inquiries, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad arrested a 28-year-old man at a Raymond Terrace home.
He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and is set to face Raymond Terrace Local Court later today.
It will be alleged in court the man, who is known to the girl, assaulted her causing the bruising.
