A tropical cyclone warning has been issued from Bundaberg to Ballina, with the effects of Cyclone Oma already being felt.
Alerts are in place for higher than normal tides, dangerous surf conditions and gale force winds.
In New South Wales, lifeguards have made the decision to close all beaches on the far north coast, while the SES is urging residents to prepare their properties and have emergency kits on hand.
