RAINBOW SERPENT TO CELEBRATE KAMILAROI CULTURE

A piece of Kamilaroi culture will take pride of place outside Gunnedah’s Cultural Precinct.

Funding was announced today to see the Rainbow Serpent Fountain created, including 32 hand-crafted mosaic pieces.

The Kamilaroi women’s group has been guarding the site for almost 16 years.

“I said if you’re going to put anything in there you need to think about it, because you’re going to have to take it out,” Gloria Foley, Kamilaroi Women’s Group.

The $300,000 project will celebrate indigenous history, and hopefully entice locals and visitors to learn more about it.

“I love the story of the serpent, how he has to go out and find the good will, the nature, through water. It is about mother earth, it is about the dust, the sun and the stars,” Kevin Anderson, Member for Tamworth.
