An early morning surf has turned into a scary ordeal for a man on the North Coast.
He was riding waves at Shelley Beach in Ballina when he was bitten on the calf by a shark.
The 43-year-old made his way to shore by himself and his friends gave him first aid while waiting for an ambulance.
He was transported to Ballina Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Shelley beach is now closed for 24-hours while jet skis and a drone survey the water.
