HEARTBREAKING LOSS: 80 DOMESTIC RABBITS INFECTED BY CALICIVIRUS

Devastation after a North Coast bunny breeder has lost almost 80 rabbits after they contracted strain two of the Calicivirus.
Strain one was released by Government two decades ago to combat the wild rabbit population – but there’s still no effective vaccine for pet owners to combat the evolved virus.

This is simply heartbreaking. When is the government going to give pet owners a vaccine to protect their pets against these cruel and inhumane viruses? Those who will pay for a vaccine are not going to release their pets into the wild and will ensure their hutches are secure. And where will these viruses lead? Already the Hare is affected – a different genome to rabbits. Viruses mutate so what will be next? In the 1990’s Tasmania was flooded with the 1080 poison and now we have facial tumours threatening to wipe out the Tassie Devil. Coincidence? I am not so sure. If a virus was released to control the feral cat population without an adequate vaccine to protect pet cats there would be outrage. So very sorry to those who have lost their pets in such a traumatic and cruel way.
I’m so very sorry for your immense loss. Binky free precious ones.
