REPORT SAYS CONTAINERS WERE LOST OFF SHIP IN WILD WEATHER

The preliminary report into a maritime incident which saw 81 containers lost overboard off the coast of Newcastle has been handed down.

The report says at just past midnight on June 1 this year, the crew on board the bulk carrier YM Efficiency heard loud noises coming from the deck during rough weather.

The crew conducted damage assessment and noticed several containers had been lost overboard.

The ongoing investigation will look at the ship’s stability condition, the container stow and lashing arrangement, actions of the ship’s officers at the time and weather conditions.
