There was cause for concern at Wallsend this morning, after a sinkhole opened up near a school.
Just before eight o’clock, the one-by-one metre hole appeared next to a footpath at Macquarie Street, near Callaghan College.
The area was cordoned off for several hours, as the larger pit beneath was filled with concrete.
It’s believed the sinkhole was caused by the collapse of old mine workings… dating back around 100 years.
