Port Macquarie surfer Matt Banting has made it through to round three of the 6000 point Qualifying Series event in Japan.
He faced South Africa’s Thomas King and fellow Aussies Reef Hazlewood and Mikey Wright to claim second spot.
It all came down to the final wave with 20-seconds on the clock.
“This is the wave that will change the heat, one way or the other gets into one a little bit late on the second one.”
Banting knocking out Wright with a total score of 10.33.
The 23-year-old will now take on Sydney’s Northern Beaches product David Vlug and USA’s Nat Young.
