NEW EDUCATIONAL GEOTRAIL ON PORT MACQUARIE’S COAST

A unique educational experience was officially unveiled in Port Macquarie today.

The four kilometre Coastal Geotrail, spanning from Shelly Beach to Rocky Beach, tells the story of plate tectonics and how the Earth’s crust is formed.

“If you move along a bit further to our right along Shelly Beach you can see a whole lot of chert which is formed out of small micro organisms that formed over more than 460 million years ago in Port Macquarie” – Professor Ron Boyd – University of Newcastle.

Locals, visitors and school students can download a free self-guiding mobile phone app to learn all about the various rock formations along the trail.
