POLICE OFFICER ASSUALTED IN NEWCASTLE
A police officer has been allegedly bitten on the thigh, while trying to arrest two men in Newcastle last night.
Officers were called to a licensed premises on Morgan Street in Merewether around 8:30 on Sunday night, where it’s alleged a 23-year-old and a 52-year-old man had started fighting other patrons.
As police attempted to arrest the pair it’s alleged one of the officers was bitten on the thigh and injured his thumb and elbow.
Both were eventually arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station.
The 23-year-old man was charged with assaulting police occasioning actual bodily harm and refused bail to face court today, while the 52-year-old man was charged with resist arrest and was granted conditional bail to appear in court in May.
