TRACK WORK HAS UNEXPECTED SIDE EFFECT

Trackwork taking place between the Broadmeadow and Newcastle railway stations has had an unexpected side-effect.

The business sector and the Fix Our City Group says the work has opened up the city, and provides proof that cutting the rail line at Wickham is a good idea.

  1. This is a no brainer. The city shouldn’t stop moving just to let an empty train rattle through. Give the city back to the people, not empty monsters.

  2. Not so….where is the vision of the masses of passengers shown boarding both taxis and busses? Not biased reporting is it ?
Typical propaganda from the anti rail movement.
I would think that the deserted station carparks along the Hunter lines would indicate usual passengers are driving their cars, rather than using a “transport interchange”.
I wonder how Mr Murphy would know the Government “is happy” with spending 6.5 Million on something passengers are not going to use ?

  3. I agree jumboman, very biased item. Getting the opinion from two avowed anti railers hardly gives the opinion of the whole population.
I did not see one commuter in the whole story.
    What a beatup…very cheap I thought.

  4. vry biased reportage – mista mcmurphy and his ant-rail mates – wonder how mny of thm use public transport. what a joke nbn, one sided reporting like this. you shuld be ashamed

  5. I completely agree with jumboman as well. Clearing the rail line into the city does not seem to make sense… Why take away another transport option into the city? Everytime i travel into the city on the train, Newcastle station is very busy… Does it not make sense that the more transport options you have to get people to your business the better??
Also how do people get their surf boards to the beaches, or their bikes into town for a ride around the foreshore? Buses wont take them…
This will NOT fix our city. And im afraid that it will only be a case of you dont know what you’ve got until its gone for the ‘fix our city’ mob to realise this…

Also agree. A cheap sell out of a news report.

  6. It is bad enough that these” Fix Our City” cronies would make such a deliberately misleading statement that the rail stoppage has “opened up the city”. The fact is that it created road traffic delays, particularly during peak hour. What is really disturbing is that the media presented a completely biased report, not even troubling themselves to ask any commuters what they though of the situation.

I imagine that lots of people drove their cars instead, which would explain why road traffic was unusually heavy in the past few days, and why many of the government busses were running late. Yesterday (Friday) I boarded a government bus at Charlestown travelling from Newcastle which was 20 minutes late. When I commented to the driver on how late the bus was, he told me that the road traffic was ‘shocking’ due to more vehicles on the road. I think these “Fix Our City” cronies cannot open their eyes wide enough to see beyond their own interests. These people do not want to fix our city, they want to fix the system in their favour so they can make profits.

  7. TO kill the rail line is political suicide. The rail line is the only reason that a lot of people come into the CBD and not to look at those hidius building that were built along wharf road by a very corrupt Lord Mayor that has his own adgenda and does’nt reall care about what the people want. The problem with the crooks in this town, referring to Taite and Murphy, is that they both own land in the east end and by closing down the rail line, it is alledged to make the land more valuable.
These people do not really care about the interest or concerns of the people of Newcastle but only how much proffet they will make on thier sale.
I have noticed the ammount of free motor cycle parking there is around the CBD and I wonder, could this be, because Taite has just recently got his motor bike learners permit? I would like to see ICAC come into this city and really find out what is going on. I bet that after the crooks get rid of the rail line, how long will it be before they two move out, after the damage is done. Avery concerned Vovacastrian.

  8. I walked in to a city in slovenia called ljubljana yesterday with my wife, and next to the park was the rail line carrying a very large load of new cars. It was difficult to see the train or the power lines as an embankment with trees blocked this unsightly view. We were able to walk through one of several underpasses which had been tastefully constructed, directly into the city. On the other side of the underpass were the national art gallery, the modern art gallery and the opera house. Thus the city could easily be accessed either side and the rail line was tastefully hidden with embankments and trees. A similiar alteration could easily be adapted to make Hunter street more acessible and beautify the surroundings.

  9. The government tried to take the trains away from our city years ago and it did not work. Novacastrians did not want the train to go and we still do not want the train to go. It will cause Gridlock. Do you think the Sydney ministers would want to take away the train from Central Station? No, so why are we wanting to remove our main station. If anyone is living in the city they should have known before they bought there that the trains were there first.

What is next, the coal ships make noise, should we close down one of the largest ports in the world just because of some noise?

  10. Great news about the Glasshouse winning the Blackett Award at the Australian Architecture Association NSW Awards on Friday night as well as a commendation in the best Public Building in NSW. Great job by the architects, the past Council and staff and the local community members who had direct input in to the building design
