INDUSTRIAL FIRE AT KOORAGANG ISLAND

There was a dark smudge of smoke over the Port of Newcastle today, amid demolition work being carried out on an old dockside crane.
It’s thought sparks from the dismantling job at the Koorangang Two berth set fire to a disused conveyor belt.
Fire units quickly brought the blaze under control, with no injuries reported.
The 50-year-old cranes are being demolished as part of a bulk terminal upgrade.
