HSC ADVANCED MATHS ENROLLMENTS DECLINE

There was some quick-fire mentoring for year nine and 10 students at Muswellbrook High today in a novel bid to get them interested in advanced mathematics.
The organisation Choose Maths says enrollment in HSC maths has plateaued, and ‘advanced’ is declining… and that’s affecting STEM-related industries.
Females were the main focus today, as only seven per cent of girls study advanced maths in year 12.
“Contributes to an ongoing wage gap but also we’re not making the most of fifty-percent of Australia’s intellectual potential.”
The mentoring sessions were seemingly successful.
“It was interesting to find out that it was involved in a lot more things than I thought.”
“After today I probably, I’d probably do maths yeah.”
